Design For Good

Digital Design:  Spring 2013 (Professor Deborah Krikun)

Week one:

Identify 3-5 non-profit agencies…

1.  Food Bank of Westchester
foodbankforwestchester.org
After researching this organization, I have decided to eliminate it from my list.
I am happy with their design and print collateral. I have nothing to add at this time.

2. Meals On Wheels
mowaa.org
I would like to create a program called an “Apple A Day” which would include one serving of fruit a day to the seniors… and/or a “Fruit Fund” as a fundraiser to raise money for the program(s).

3. Westchester Library System
westchesterlibraries.org
katonahlibrary.org
mountkiscolibrary.org
Current library programs include a “Brown Bag” book discussion group at the Mount Kisco Library, and a Sci-Fi book club and Poetry Series at the Katonah Library.  My idea is to create a universal logo that can be altered to promote the individual programs, but retaining an element as a base design.

4. Boys and Girls Club of Mt. Kisco
bgca.org
boysandgirlsclubnw.org
The Mount Kisco location hosts the “Marlins” Swim Team.  My idea is to create a logo for the team.
A Golf Tournament is also held each year.  A permanent logo can be created for this annual event.

5. SPCA of Westchester
spca914.org
My initial idea was to create a new logo for this organization.  After long thought, I have decided to eliminate this option from my list. My solution of a dog and/or cat image fell short of my initial inspiration to “improve” their logo design.

6. Stamford Museum and Nature Center
stamfordmuseum.org
I fell in love with this place after a visit this past summer with my friend and her two small children.  I was most captivated by their Otter Pond, which is a focal point of the Center, as well as a “gateway” to its entrance.  When researching, I learned that the museum/mansion on the property once belonged to fashion tycoon, Henri Bendel.  I also learned that there is an observatory which is open on Friday nights.  Further exploration on the SMNC website informed me of an annual Wine Tasting fundraiser, which inspired me to brainstorm logo and design projects for this organization.  I believe it is an “Otterly Fantastic” option.

7. Hudson River Museum and Plantetarium
hrm.org
I found myself frustrated when visiting the HRM website… frustrated both with the design and the user interface.  This organization has some great features and focal points that get lost.  Initially, HRM seemed like a great case study to work with… but I am falling short of ideas.

Some great features or attractions of HRM include its fine arts Museum, a Planetarium, and a period Mansion which is in under renovation but with access to several rooms.   HRM also has an educational program about the Hudson River and its wild life.  I was happily shocked to learn that their are actually sea horses in our river!  Specifically, the “Lined Seahorse”, which could prove useful as a design element.  There are many programs offered by HRM to both children and adults, the most interesting of which is the “Family Science Projects” in which family members can be scientists for a day and create experiments.  This also spawned brainstorming images.

8. Muscoot Farm
muscootfarm.org
Unfortunately, I have chosen to eliminate this organization from my list.  I have enjoyed several visits to Muscoot Farm, but after a discouraged visit to their website, I was left with no direction.  The features of the farm are few and broad. This organization is difficult to harness.

9. Family Services of Westchester
fsw.org
After hours searching the web for this and that, I found FSW, a wonderful organization.  They offer a lot of services but only one jumped right at me:  “Adopt A Grandparent.”  It made me want to do just that!  But with my free time limited, perhaps I could help by bringing attention to the program, as it is not easy to find on their website and not well promoted.
